NJHA’s Nurses in the Boardroom

In 2010, the Institute of Medicine issued its report, The Future of Nursing, as a result of a twoyear initiative to assess and transform the nursing profession. This initiative was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the report contained several recommendations including that, “nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other healthcare professionals, in redesigning healthcare in the United States.” Nurses should be ready to assume leadership roles on advisory and governance boards where policy decisions regarding healthcare are made, and where they can impact healthcare reformrelated implementation efforts.

4. Understand board structure and competencies of board governance
5. Become familiar with financial statement reports at the board level
